The Beech Hill Memorial Hall now has its own website at www.bhmh.org.uk which should be used for bookings, facilities etc.
The Original Memorial Hall was built after the 1914/18 war and opened on 13th November 1921 as a memorial to those who fought and fell in the First World War. Although a United Services Fund grant is assumed to have been put towards the cost of the hall, there is some pride that much local fundraising and work towards the project was carried out by Beech Hill residents. A cross-stitch Roll of Honour on the wall of the hall comemorates the eighty two local servicemen who served in the Great War with nine who lost their lives during the conflict.
The hall was used for a wide range of activities by the Beech Hill Mens' Club, the Mothers' Union and others. During the Second World War a hut was built for the Home Guard alongside the hall. At the end of the war this hut was converted into the kitchen.
Over the years the building started to show signs of the use made of it, and In the early 2000's it was discovered that the foundations we deteriorating due to subsidence and rot, and investigation made into the cost of repairing and re-furbishing the much-loved building. It soon became apparent that the cost of making the building safe would be not much different from the cost of building a brand new hall.
In 2008 the Memorial Hall Committee led by Charlie Carter and Graham Bell started a concerted effort to raise the £180,000 needed and start work on building a new hall. As with the original hall much of the fundraising and work on the project was carried out by Beech Hill residents.
Because of the fond memories of the original hall, and the fact that the hall was our war memorial, it was a pre-requisite that the new hall should be built in the style of the original, but the opportunity was taken to construct a larger building with modern materials and environmentally friendly features.
Building work started early in 2010 and opened on 6th August 2011 by Richard Benyon MP
